after Van Gogh

Just foolin' around in my sketchbook with some studies after Van Gogh. The top two are from the Potato Eaters and the bottom one is my watercolour from his oil portrait called "Head of a Woman with her hair loose".

  3. The two monochrome drawings are so good, they have the emotional feel of VG's Potato Eaters, and looking at your sketches brings his full painting to my mind. And i like the Nora influence on the girl.

  4. Fabulous pieces, Nora! I immediately recognized the woman from The Potato Eaters. That painting is one Vincent believed was worthy of recognition and it was criticized terribly by his brother and all who saw the piece. I personally really like it, though VvG wasn't a particularly pleasant guy (from my reading of his biography). Too, I may be wrong, but I think the biography mentioned this woman as a single woman in the area in which he lived that it was widely believed he impregnated. Unfortunately, the book only mentioned it a couple of times in passing and nothing was ever said about the baby or the woman once she went away to have her baby.

  8. The modeling of the face in the watercolor is very nice! It appears that the Van Gogh studies have had an influence on the light and dark planes of this face. Beautiful work!
