charcoal and watercolour

Charcoal Drawing
Adding a second (and final) layer of watercolour
Some charcoal added to the shadow side

Last Tuesday's portrait night at Don Valley Art Club ended off our summer sessions just right. : )
I drew the model in charcoal, painted it with watercolour then brought it together with a layer of charcoal. The final charcoal, on the shadow side, didn't blend like I anticipated it would, I think because it was sitting on top of the watercolour. I like it, but I think it looks a bit 'rough' and I may save this technique for a male model next time. I'm happy that I played around and tried something different, which I guess is what it's all about...

Willow dale Group of Artists Portrait Session

On Tuesday nights, at the Willowdale Group of Artists, the artists pose for each other for 40 minutes each (two sessions of 20). It's a great way to get lots of portrait practise so, if you belong to an art group, I highly recommend this approach. : )
Very happy with this one. Just had to touch up the bottom of his beard with pencil line when I got home.

a Tuesday in April

SOLD
I spent this rainy Tuesday urban sketching in a dry cafe, drawing people.
$40 - 5x7"painting with 8x10"mat.
Here's my process -
I drew with my 6B pencil on a small hot-pressed watercolour pad.
You can see my tiny palette, that was once an eye shadow kit! Very unobtrusive!
Also, my small water container, a rag and my size 14 watercolour paint brush.
Another customer sat down, so I quickly added her, left of the blonde woman.
Happy with this one... and onto another. : )

quick on the draw

When the model's pose isn't to my liking, there is always someone else to draw!

make time

SOLD

I've been painting on hot-pressed paper lately. Due to the smooth texture the paint sits on top of the paper, unlike cold pressed which absorbs the paint slightly. As a result, I think the watercolour keeps it's colour and glows more. I also like the way the pencil glides across this paper. I think I'll stick with it!

till next time

SOLD

Today's moment. I quickly sketched this young woman as she sat patiently waiting for a text. I'm still enjoying working with the 140lb hot pressed watercolour paper which is a bit like Yuppo, but more manageable.
$50  6"x8" painting with 8"x10" matt.

lion's share

SOLD

I just got home from a wonderful trip with my sister to London and Paris! It was just fantabulous. I was especially inspired by the fantastic lush overgrown Highgate Cemetery in London. This sleeping lion is on the grave of the first Zookeeper George Wombwell, then called a menagerist.
