all together

$60 - 6x6" original oil painting on 1" deep panel.
I loved painting the little circles on the vase! This low strong lighting, (an idea I got from the awesome dailypainter Lisa Daria) is really cool. Such wonderful contrasts! Check out pics below...

Prismacolor Coloured Pencils

Some fellow artist and I from, the Toronto Plein-Air Group, met at the awesome Riverdale Farm to do some sketching. In order to take colour out of the equation and get back to basics, I decided to draw with Prismacolor Coloured Pencils on newsprint.
I used Sepia because it's a nice warm brown (although it's a bit hard to tell with my location photos). Newsprint is equally good and bad. It's soft so it's lovely to draw on. It 'takes' so many drawing media, like pencil, coloured pencil and charcoal, so nicely. But, it yellows over time since it isn't acid-free. Very  frustrating! So, I'm on the search for a paper than is smooth like newsprint and allows erasing as easily. I guess I'll have to go back to my favourite place... the art store. ; )
 Here's a detail.
So great to be back out there plein-air drawing. I've only been twice this summer. That'll have to change!

Seahorse Charlie aka Magic Man

$60 - 5x7"original watercolour painting with 8x10"mat

Seahorse Charlie aka 'Magic Man':
Charlie, with eyes wide open, floats through the seagrass beds looking for that special someone. Last week he told you about himself. Well, he's ready to tell you more. Charlie is a professional magician. He can move his chameleon like eyes independently of each other! Also, his camouflage ability enables him to change colours abracadabra. And, he can hold his breath underwater for... a really long time. He could magically be yours, just link up through PayPal. ; )

towards the sun

$60 - 5x7"original watercolour painting with 8x10"mat.

I think I'm starting to like yellow... : )
It's a difficult colour in watercolour and it doesn't have the value range of other colours, but it certainly suits the arrival of spring.

treat

SOLD
$60 - 5x7"original watercolour painting with 8x10"mat.

I saw this scene on my way home, as I was cutting down my favourite little lane. I stopped and drew it, although the man and his dog were long gone, putting them in from memory. They were both so cute. I'm sure the man enjoyed giving his dog the treat as much as the dog enjoyed receiving it. ; )

language

$100 - 8x10"original watercolour painting
I love drawing and painting people in cafes. I thought the lights hanging from the ceiling encouraged the perspective. These two friends were talking about learning a language however, the title also refers to people's body language, like the way his head is tilted and the posture of the guy writing in the background. : )

group photo

$60 - 5x7"original watercolour painting with 8x10"mat

I was aiming for strong contrasts between the white daisy and warm brown vase when I did this daily painting. The pink flowers were a nice cool subtle contrast to the single white one. And the little red beads, well they just spice it up. ; )

It's just so fun adding a few final splatters to encourage that playful look!

criss cross

$60 - 5x7"original watercolour painting with 8x10"mat.
I'm finding my way during figure painting classes lately with a rose and olive watercolour palette. Since the poses are quick and I'm working 'on the fly', I find deciding on the paper size and the colours I'm going to use, before the class starts, gives me the opportunity to just concentrate on getting an interesting line then putting in select values.

the road less travelled

$60 - 5x7"watercolour painting with 8x10"mat
I created this painting based on sketches of trees in my sketchbook. So, I guess that makes it my first imaginary landscape. I concentrated on reproducing the trees interesting shapes then added lots of cobalt violet and splatters!

to long friendships

$100 - 8x10" original watercolour painting

These flowers fell together like an old bunch of friends.
I love the little brown cup, which I've had it for some time and painted before. I'd forgotten about it and, stumbling across it this morning, I though small pink flowers would look cute in it.

Flowers have such a beautiful abstract quality. They really are a joy to paint. And this turquoise vase is one of my favourites.
