I've been painting with watercolour a lot lately however, this morning, it was time to get back to oil. I love painting two vases of flowers side by side, since they 'play' off each other. And, I added a nice strong side light. Super fun.

I really wanted to focus on this proud friend's beautiful turquoise crown, or crest, today. It's quite stunning and sometimes overlooked since people get dazzled by the feathers on the peacock's tail. I enjoyed painting this beauty. (Very happy with the eye!). This little garlic clove is casting a cute curvy shadow. 😉 I tried to get overhead and close up for an interesting composition for this piece. Also, I love it when the shadows fall onto two different coloured surfaces. So fun to paint and 'match up'.  I really wanted to paint from life today because it's a good colour reminder and it really helps when I go back to photos for reference.

I chose to paint this dashing beauty because of his bold look. His orange beak and blue body are perfect complimentary colours. He just seems to confident! And I think my bird paintings are getting more confident too. ; )

This colourful beauty can be found amongst the trees in Africa. One of the most colourful birds known to us, the lilac-breasted roller. So fun to paint! And I kept the brach flowers loosey-goosey so he stayed the star of the show.

Well, the long weekend came and went... that was fast! #doh  

I'm just catching up on my three latest bird paintings. I'm super happy with them. I really tried to make clean and colourful 'one-brush-mark' marks.

Here's the black and white 5 value study that we did in the awesome Sarah Sedwick Online Oil Level 2 Class on Saturday.

It was really helpful to do this! I often do a value sketch with pencil or charcoal first however, doing it in oil first really made a difference. 

Here's my set up, very similar to my iPad view during the Zoom class, so Sarah could see. There were about 18 of us and Sarah shared her screen, so she had her demo and her palette showing. It was really an excellent workshop. Very informative.

And here I am, sneaking into the photo. Cameras love to make one of my eyes wonky. #shrug

In order to capture the little "whispies" of the willow buds, I used a toothpick. 

Sometimes, a brush just doesn't do the job.

Also, I don't normally paint like this but, when painting glass, it can be easier to just fill in the whole background.

Then I started to build up the glass. Normally, I do a drawing with burnt umber and a thin brush and work my way out. It was quite a challenge to take this approach but... always learning! Cheers.

I love the shape of this oil bottle. It's got a kind of confidence about it. The tomatoes are certainly enthralled with what it has to say! 

I used the lovely Ampersand flat (1/8") panel, pre-gessoed, for this piece. They are wonderful to paint on!

I love these orange and pink flowers together. They just glowed under the light as I painted them in my studio. Also, these charming little 4x4" panels allow for a looseness that a bigger size doesn't always encourage. : )

I was so inspired by the photo of these lovely wine red hellebores that, after painting them in watercolour for my last post, I decided to paint them again in oil. It was nice to paint the watercolour first then spring off in a slightly different direction for the oil. I think it encouraged a looser oil painting. Such pretty flowers.

This painting will be displayed on the Square Foot Wall at the upcoming Don Valley Art Club Show. Every artist contributes one 12x12" painting, each hanging 1" from each other, floor to ceiling. It always looks super cool!
