I saw lots of gators over the holidays. So cute. They usually just bask in the sun or float along (looking exactly like a log!) in a shallow swamp. Again, so cute. Seriously!

I'm sooo inspired by oil painting lately! I work in watercolour a lot (because I teach beginners watercolour) and I love it however, the thick gooeyness of oil is super fun to work with.

Today felt like a watercolour day. I work with both oil and watercolour and this morning, this sweet subject said 'watercolour' to me. Actually, working in one medium can teach me a lot about the other! ; )

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

A Sketchbook and Pencil.

Bring the Watercolour supplies and paper that you are familiar with. Scroll down to see the supply list that I'll be using. 

We will PAINT TOGETHER from the raccoon photo below. If you have your heart set on a different raccoon photo, feel free to use it.

I'll email you a copy of this photo, and more helpful raccoon reference pics, when you register.

 SUPPLIES

PAPER

I'll be using - 8x10" Fluid Hot-Pressed Paper. The paint sits a bit differently on hot-pressed paper. If you think now is the time to try hot-pressed paper, great! However, feel free to use the paper you like.

PAINT

I use Winsor & Newton Paint Tubes that are squeezed out and ‘dry’.

Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Violet and Burnt Sienna.

BRUSHES

Use the brushes you like and are familiar with. I use synthetic point brushes size 6 and 8. Lowe-Cornell 720 Ultra Round and/or King Art Original Gold 9020 Max Round.

OTHER

Hello Fellow Artists! To enroll in the Monday Morning Watercolour Classes at Neilson Park Creative Centre in Toronto just email Sharon at - and let her know who you are and that you want to enroll in my Winter 2023 classes. 

The classes start on Jan. 9 and go until Mar. 6th. Desks are 6' apart.

The cost is $200 for 8 classes (#woohoo #gooddeal). 

They are held at 56 NEILSON DRIVE in Toronto/Etobicoke from 9:30am-12pm.

I know, I know... we haven't even had Halloween yet! But, the following Saturday, I'll have a table at the Annual Christmas Market Craft Sale. It's a super fun, affordable, crafts-y show. Inktober - Nest

 

The prompt word 'nest' encouraged me to check the free images site called Pixabay, where this lovely image popped up. This nest idea is now on my 'Winter Painting' list. I've bought some long thin canvases (10x20), since I love the format, and on those snowy days I hope to try them out. Perhaps you'll be seeing more nests in the new year! ; )

Inktober - Gargoyle, Scurry and Bouquet

 So far, I'm having a blast participating in Inktober 2022

For the month of October, artists are encouraged to do a daily drawing with ink.

By following the prompt list, I end up painting a lot of things I might not paint.

I'm using the Elegant Writer Pens by Speedball. They're watersoluble so, the dark ink bleeds as I add watercolour, a look I enjoy for this project.

Two Pups

I drew these two pups, which were sooooo cute, while at a cafe enjoying a sunny day. I love the striped shirt vs. the flower shirt, not to mention the contrast with the checkered chair backs. Lots of fun stuff to paint!

This is my new way of presenting my paintings. It took some time to perfect it, but the painting is completely adhered to the panel, painted with gouache. I love painting a strong vibrant colour for the background. It's like it's own frame so, it's ready to hang. Varnished too!

This cutie-patootie chipmunk is enjoying a little breakfast in the garden. In an upcoming art class I'm teaching, we will be talking about contour lines and a warm/cool palette. So, in preparation for my class demo, I drew this little snookums with a energetic line then painted him with a two-colour palette, of warm orange and cool violet. Super happy with him. ; )

​Watercolour on Cradled Panel! I'm so please that I was able to safely adhere the 5x7" watercolour painting on paper to a 6x8" cradled panel. It's ready to go (see photo below). I painted the panel orange, which I think really adds to it, and then sprayed it with a watercolour friendly varnish. No more glass. Phew.

This sweet little marmalade jar, with the morning light shinning through it, just spoke to me. I saw it as a watercolour right away. Sometimes... that just happens with an object.

Art Show and Sale!

Hello! Long time no post. 😆

I'm in a group art show here in Toronto, at the lovely historical St.Barnabas Church. If you're around on the Friday August 5th from 6-9pm or the Saturday August 6th from 11-6, come by and say Hi! I've been doing a lot of outdoor painting this summer. I promised myself I'd get back at so... a few of those will be at the show too.
