think it through

This is my third 'Cafe Moment' in this style. I've been working on adding pattern and shading to my drawing, without obliterating the contour line.

  1. Impressive line work as usual, and I like the balance of busy parts with a lot of details and the simple clean ones.

  5. I always thought contour line drawings were so interesting and they are expressive as well. What a wonderful style to stick to & develop. Your work has so much energy & liveliness. They make me want to be there drawing, painting too!

  9. Really cool sketch! Although you work in line, I love the gaps - it's as if you are thinking in planes of value or color rather than line. Really neat.

  13. So tell me please, are these done quickly or painstakingly slowly? I know from experience people do not stay seated indefinitely, and with so many figures how do you do it? A quick sketch first and then go back with details? Look at me? I want ALL your secrets!!!! LOL This one is another gem!!!

    1. Hey Lynn, I'll message you more details but, basically I start with one person in the foreground and let the drawing evolve around them. There is no sense, for me, in blocking in since they leave anyway. I draw kind of fast, but I try not to life the pen off the paper.

With this one I started with the girl on the right, finished drawing her then moved onto the guy sitting on the left and took it from there. If she left as I was drawing him, I'll just measure the background people from him... or from her empty chair.

Sounds difficult but I promise it does work. And quirky perspective is part of it.
      Happy Sketching,
      Nora
