afternoon outing

$60 - original 8x10"watercolour painting with 8x10"mat
Well, here's my second piece from the day at the beach. I looooove painting boats (even little ones!) and plan to paint more of them this summer. They are colourful wonderful shapes. Here's a pic of my paintbox. You can see people standing by the boats but I added the little knapsack. : )

shoes on the line

$50 - 6x8"painting
This cold weather has me missing summer... and I always thought these shoes hanging on the clothesline were kinda cute. : )

Inktober Portrait

The great thing about participating in challenges like InkTober is that it forces me out of my comfort zone. The idea is to work in ink everyday for the whole month. So, while in my portrait session, I blocked in with pencil then worked with a 3 micron pen. I never do that and I may not have tried if it wasn't for InkTober!
From there, I tried something else I haven't done for awhile, which is one colourful wash from top to bottom, on the shadow side only. This approach often allows for lots of colour!

rise and shine

SOLD

I'm really enjoying these small fresh watercolour paintings of flowers that I've been doing. I'm trying not to overthink anything, not the set up and not the approach, so that they are as light and clean as possible. : )

hummin' along singin' a song

$60 - 5x7"painting with 8x10"mat.
This little fella was actually part of the same still life set up as the previous post. However, he was so colourful, he stole all the attention. I figured, he needed to be in a painting all to himself. I really wanted to let the watercolour blend and do it's thing in this piece. It's pretty much exactly what I'm going for when I work.

nice view

$60  -5x7"painting wit 8x10"mat.
Well... it looks like most of the Cherry Blossom Trees are loosing their lovely pink petals this season. Until next year!

curiosity

$60 - 5x7"painting with 8x10"mat.
I've only got a few more days to capture the Cherry Blossom Trees. It's always a race against time during the two week blossoming of these gorgeous trees!

laze around

$60  5x7"painting with 8x10"mat.
I love the look of a dark ink line when painting something light and delicate like a cherry blossom tree. It gives a nice strong contrast. Also, it came in handy when drawing the dog's hair. : )

blossoming

$60 - 5x7"painting with 8x10"mat.
It's that time of year again! The cherry blossom trees are happening. They last about 2 weeks so you have to capture them quick.

Museum of Inuit Art

I had fun over the weekend doing some Urban Sketching with the Toronto sketchers at the Museum of Inuit Art. They don't allow watercolours, understandably, so I used a Tombow pen. It has a brush on one end and a nib on the other. It is water-soluble so, I added a bit of finger smudge for shading.

fine feathered friends

$60 - 5x7"painting with 8x10"mat.
These two are enjoying a little thoughtful conversation after a long holiday break.

on holiday

Spent some time at a cafe doing a little people sketching. I used a 6B pencil. Both men were relaxed and I wanted to capture the way they were draped onto their chairs... hence the title of the painting.
Then I added a bit of line work, finding the darks with a Micron Brush pen. After a while, the main fellow put on a scarf which I happily added.
And of course, I added watercolour. The thing that attracted me to the sketch in the first place was the way the hands, shoe and legs all lined up. It was like a game of Twister! Fun to draw. : )

drifted

I'm loving these new artist pens. They are water soluble, so anything goes once I add a splash of water and some watercolour paint!

every other

$60  5x7"painting with 8x10"mat
I loved drawing this! The cars were flying by on the road along side the train that I was sitting in. Then, I painted it with the same vigour and speed as I drew it. One of my faves. : )

train ride on a rainy day

SOLD
This is the second painting of my train ride series. The lines get a little 'train shaky' as I draw them, and I try to keep that energy with watercolour once I add paint in my studio.
$60 - 8x10"painting. Ready for an 11x14"frame.

a pearl of wisdom

I really enjoyed painting this portrait! I almost didn't touch the line drawing, but in the end I figured I'd go for it.
The art show last week went very well. Thank you so much to all those that came out to it!
I have all of my art framed and ready for a few more group art shows before X-mas, and now I have time to get back to doing some watercolour painting.
Stay tuned. : )

"Jo" and "think aloud"

Jo
think aloud
InkTober is keeping my on my toes with portraits! I'm drawing with an RSVP pen, which is quite fine, then adding a wash. Also, finished framing all my work today in preparation for the show this weekend. Super excited! Watercolours really shine once they are matted and framed.
Here's info for the Toronto Riverdale Group Art Show.

Sue's hat... Jim's hat

I'm really enjoying InkTober! It's got me doing 3-value portrait studies with an RSVP pen and wash, homework that is long overdue. It's easy to get caught up in the wonderful world of watercolour, but sometimes it's important to go back to basics. Also, I do love painting people wearing hats. : )
