pause... and paws

$80 - 5x7" original watercolour painting in 8x10"mat
Bernese Mountain Dog - so lovely. I thought I'd title it pause, because he's taking a little break. And then I thought... oh... paws! So naturally the title became "pause... and paws" Heehee. I do like painting dogs, especially when they have darks and lights in their fur colours, that way there's lots of colour contrast.

carmine

This Carmine beauty is part of the African bee-eater family. I love the turquoise crown on this one, and of course the red/pink belly that gives it it's name.
This bird is painting number 30 (!) in the bird series. Phew! I haven't made it past 3 in a series before. #doh. You may see another bird or two fly onto my canvas in the future but for now, onto new subjects.

eye on the prize

SOLD

$100 - 5x7" original oil painting on board

I used a new palette of colours for this painting, not my typical pinks and purples. The 'gold' flecks are actually yellow ochre paint with a bit of white. I peppered it through the background and gave this little friend some to eat. ; ) Next to the grey green background the yellow ochre really sings. I love the effect. I added turquoise to his wing, which is quite cool in temperature and it's making the cool green background look really warm in comparison. I'm still learning lots about temperature and how amazing it is to work with. Cheers.

kindred spirit

SOLD  $90 - 5x7" original oil painting on 1/8"panel.

Well, the bird painting series continues! I think I'm on number 12 and 8 of them have flown off to new homes. I'm especially happy with this little yellow-breasted blue titmouse. He's got his own little branch and he seems quite content. You can check out the time-lapse painting of him over on my Instagram account here - https://www.instagram.com/noramacphailart/ . Cheers. : )

I love the glow of light behind these adorable Kingfishers, it shows off their distinctive crowns. The bigger one is peeking around the smaller one. #socute

inside joke

Today's Two Colour Portrait was with Lemon Yellow and Dioxazine Purple, plus white for mixing. I'm getting the hang of this limited palette approach. : )

Secret

SOLD
$90 - 5x7" original oil painting on 1/8"panel.
Today's two colour portrait was done with a cool pink and a warm brown. Again I added white, of course, as well as some black for strong contrasts. I'm really liking this limited palette because then I can concentrate on structure and brush strokes. : )

I used turquoise and violet for this two colour painting. It was a challenge to use the limited palette. I added white and black... but I'm still calling it a two colour portrait. ; )

I loved painting these big pink glasses! And her expression is so cute. Thanks again to the awesome sktchy app for providing photos for all of us artist to paint from. Especially during these difficult times when portrait sessions are on hold.

purple hellebores

5x7" original watercolour painting with 8x10" acid-free mat

Well, it was back to watercolour for these lovely flowers. This week's challenge, with a paint group I belong to, was "the emergence of spring". A fellow artist provided a lovely photo of cute little hellebores. I tried to incorporate the many layers of earth and leaves around these wine purple beauties.

polka dot reflections

SOLD
I had a blast figuring out the many reds in this little set up. The warmth of the red glass and the little polka dots challenged me for hours! The sides are painted pink too. Also with little polka dots. : )
Pics below show my process and my materials.

red rocks

I love painting with red. It's such a warm wonderful colour. For some reason, it's kind of scary to use... but it often works great!

I painted these fruity friends with lots of loosey-goosey brushstrokes and topped them off with dabs of hot pink! #superfun

through and through

5x7" original oil painting
Viridain Green paint is always a pleasure to use because it's a very relaxed pigment. It's not that strong a colour and it's got a cool temperature. I used it for the lighting on the side of the model's face. I really enjoyed warming up this painting with lots of oranges and reds for contrast. : )

first oil portrait

$100 - 5x7" original oil on 1" wooden panel with purple edges (see pic below)
Well, this is my first OIL portrait. I've painted with oil. I've painted portraits. But never together! The lower lighting on the model was just fantastic. Phew. Now, onto a second.

December already!

$60 - 5x7"gouache sketch with thin border, includes 8x10"mat.

I tell ya', this gouache stuff is so vibrant, silky... and tricky. It's not watercolour and it's not quite oil. I'm having lots of fun figuring it out though! Meanwhile, how is it already December?! #onlythreeweeks #goodprice ; )
