life drawing

I'm still attending life drawing sessions regularly. They are such a great challenge and wonderful way to keep at my drawing practise. Here are a few 2 minute poses drawn with charcoal pencil and then watercolour added.

Happy National Ferret Day!

"Who me?" - I painted this little one for The Ferret Challenge over at Daily Paintworks, which I entered this week. I figured, being National Ferret Day, it would be a fun subject for people to explore. : )

Toronto Watercolour Society - Linda Kemp Workshop

Well, here is my first ever attempt at Negative Painting. I spent the weekend taking a  2 Day Toronto Watercolour Society Workshop with the amazing Linda Kemp. She is a fantastic teacher. We did lots of helpful exercises. Then we did a colourful wet-in-wet wash on our 140b cold-pressed paper, using fresh tube paints, and painted AROUND the positive shapes (berries). Basically, paint the space between the braches, not the branches. It really stretches your artistic vision.
Check out her website HERE
If you ever get a chance to take a class with her, take it!
Happy Painting Everyone!

Well, this is the first time I've used cold-pressed paper in years! I always use hot pressed. I'm actually practising with this paper for an upcoming workshop I'm taking with the lovely negative painter Linda Kemp. Looking forward to learning to see shapes better. : )

in the stars

$60 - 7x5"painting with 10x8"mat
Normally this time of year I am painting snowscapes, which I love. Especially city street scenes with snow. However, with this crazy mild snow-less winter we are having, I haven't had a chance. So, instead I am really enjoying setting up still lifes and working in the studio.  The challenge here was to make a nice dark background to offset the lovely white flowers.

I found this cute little bird house and decided, being small, it would suit my still life set up style. It's now friends with all the other items in my crowded cupboard of goodies. : )

stage whisper

This painting is now framed.
$100 - 8x10"watercolour painting I really enjoyed working in studio with this little set up! Red flowers are tough to do in watercolour, they can get a bit heavy and dead pretty quick if I'm not careful. Very pleased with this one. : )

SOLD

I've been going through a new animal drawing book by Glenn Vilppu. He's a wonderful draftsman and the book inspired me to paint this early morning black bear, wandering out to start his day. I used a photo from the wonderful website WetCanvas' reference photo library.

I recently rediscovered a wonderful colour called Magenta. I say rediscovered because, I had it on my palette years ago and replaced it somewhere along the road. My palette is always changing and putting this lovely purple back into the picture is, so far, great! : )
