Spring isn't quite in the air... but I'm gearing up for it!! 

My next project will be putting my watercolour paintings on board and waxing (!) them so they do not need to be framed behind glass. I'm very excited about this new way of showing my art. I've been watching lots of videos about how to do this, as well as talking to fellow artists who've done it successfully. Fingers crossed. #nextproject

Well, this is a big painting for me! It comes in an 11x14"mat, ready to frame. This little hut, at the end of the ​road, has lots of colourful objects left about - obviously lived in and obviously an escape from the big city. I looooved painting this lovely Japanese house. The home is tall and thin with vines growing down it - nothing like what I see here in Toronto. 

I really appreciate the generosity of Marek and Wade for sharing their live demos on Instagram, as well as the unique pic. I drew with a charcoal pencil, focusing on the bicycles, then added tons of watercolour. The umbrella, the awning, the planters with the lovely vine growing - So much to paint and enjoy!

I wanted to paint this lovely lakefront cabin because of the string of pennants that hang across the deck. So colourful... right up my alley! Thanks to Instagramers Marek and Shari, and Christina for the photo, who encouraged us all to paint along with them during their live demo.

I love red and pink

The cute colourful glass vases that I got over the holidays continue to inspire me! Since I love red and pink together, I popped a pink flower into the vase and put it under a strong light. I really enjoyed painting the red reflections on the white tablecloth. Check out the pics below, of my easel and set up!

I bought this pad of Strathmore cool blue paper because of it's rough tooth, plus  it's 180lb, so it can take some thick paint.

As you can see, the cool blue is very gray. That's my gouache palette, with a water tight lid. I love it. I was encouraged to get it by the awesome gouache painter Lena Rivo.

It's weird to be painting with white paint, since I'm a watercolour artist and never needed it! As you can see from my palette, I misjudged how much I needed. ; b

Finally, a few close ups of the painting. You can see the tooth of the paper coming through due to it's rough texture. I'm very happy with this bright little piece.

February's Flower - the violet

Work Small, Learn Big! I think this credo is soooo true for artists. Sunday portrait sessions at the awesome Don Valley Art Club are starting to pay off with many small studies. I like small paintings, they warm up the nooks and crannies of the home. : )
