the getaway

$100 - 6x9" original watercolour painting in 9x12"mat.
I wanted to paint this lovely lakefront cabin because of the string of pennants that hang across the deck. So colourful... right up my alley! Thanks to Instagramers Marek and Shari, and Christina for the photo, who encouraged us all to paint along with them during their live demo.
Here's a few more photos - : )

$100 - 5x7" original oil painting on board

I've been interested in the look of things under water lately. (Like last week's bear feet). Today is was the white rocks that take on beautiful brown and orange colours in a shallow creek. I've wanted to paint this photo of mine for a long time and happily, today was the day!

$60 - 5x7"original watercolour painting with 8x10"mat.
I really relaxed into the pen markings with this one. ; )

just calm

$60 - 5x7"original watercolour painting with acid-free 8x10"mat.

It's cloudy today so my mood took me in this direction. I'm trying to respond to the colours, which I put down first, when adding the simple pen lines. Previously, I've always drawn before painting and this reverse process is really stretching my artist muscles.

sun mountain

$60 - 5x7" original watercolour painting with 8x10"mat

I'm really enjoying making beautiful colourful washes, that only watercolour can make, with a new pad of cold-pressed paper. I'm still devoted to the hot-pressed that I've used for years but, to be honest, it doesn't take washes well. However, it does keep the incredible vibrancy of watercolours. I started watercolour painting with cold-pressed, as most artist do, and it's a treat revisiting it!

rocky stream

SOLD
$60 - 5x7"original watercolour painting and 8x10"mat

Fellow painters and I spent the day at the wonderful Toronto Botanical Gardens called Edwards Gardens. While under a shady tree, I painted this rocky stream, which was moving quite fast from all the rain we've had. There were about 10 of us from the Don Valley Art Club there and we all had a great sunny day. Below are a few pics of my trusty paintbox. ; )

the road less travelled

$60 - 5x7"watercolour painting with 8x10"mat
I created this painting based on sketches of trees in my sketchbook. So, I guess that makes it my first imaginary landscape. I concentrated on reproducing the trees interesting shapes then added lots of cobalt violet and splatters!

the evening Bow River

$60 - 5x7"painting with 8x10"mat.
Well, this is my first painting on rough watercolour paper! It's wonderful. I felt the subject just called for it. This painting is the beautiful Bow River and one of it's many splinter rivers that it's strong current creates.

travelling along

SOLD
$60 - 5x7"painting with 8x10"mat
I spent the day plein-air painting with the Don Valley Art Club at the Toronto Botanical Gardens, also known as Edwards Gardens. Here is my step by step process...
I painted this waterfall, which I've painted before, but from the other side of the bridge. I worked from my trusty little paintbox. Here's the drawing in 6B pencil.
Half way there... I like to add darks early, so I can determine the values right from the beginning. Artists often do watercolour from light to dark however, when I do that it never seems to take forever to get dark enough...
All done. You can see the pink bulldog clip on the right of the box holding a rag in place. There's also a few paper towels, a compact mirror (to look at the piece in reverse while painting) and an 8x10"mat (under the box) to make sure it'll fit nicely into a frame when finished. Quite a challenge!

I painted this wonderful lavender for the Daily Paintworks "Escape the Snow" Challenge. I love the weekly challenge posted on the DPW site, it makes me paint subjects I might not otherwise explore. : )

view from the morning train

I've been teaching a watercolour class just west of Toronto and I've used the commute as inspiration for a few paintings. Fortunately, the GoTrain that I take just briskly coasts through the city, perfect for getting pen lines down and a feel for the landscape as it slips on by.

the hillside

$60 - 5x7"painting with 8x10"mat
This week's Daily Paintworks Challenge is to paint sunflowers. I had a wonderful time with this painting. I enjoyed adding all the wild purple and blue flowers and doing lots of negative painting within the stems. As well as a bit of 'fingernail scratches'. : )

tree

$60 - 5x7"painting with 8x10"mat
I did it! 7 Days of Trees. This tree has a special place in my heart. I love it's shape. And now it's your turn... over at The Daily Paintworks Challenge!
